Testing glossary

What is mobile app testing?

Mobile app testing checks native or hybrid apps on iOS and Android devices for function, compatibility and performance.

Mobile testing covers device and OS fragmentation, permissions, notifications, offline behaviour and app store release processes. Because releases cannot be rolled back instantly, catching bugs before submission matters more than on the web.

Teams combine emulators for fast feedback with real devices for release confidence, and test the APIs the app depends on, including compatibility with older app versions.

Example

A backend change removes a field that version 3.2 of the app still reads. Most users have not updated, and an API compatibility test catches the crash before deploy.

Best practices

  • Define a device and OS matrix from usage data
  • Test permissions, push and offline states
  • Keep API compatibility tests for live app versions
  • Run the full suite on each release candidate
