Testing glossary

What is cross-browser testing?

Cross-browser testing checks that a website works correctly in different browsers, engines and screen sizes.

Browsers implement standards slightly differently. Safari’s WebKit, Chrome’s Chromium and Firefox’s Gecko handle layout, input, storage and media in ways that produce browser-specific bugs.

Teams usually test the engines that cover their real traffic, at desktop and mobile sizes, and add real devices where engine emulation is not enough.

Example

A date input works in Chrome but shows a blank field in Safari, so customers on iPhone cannot book appointments.

Best practices

  • Pick browsers from your analytics
  • Test WebKit for every iOS user
  • Cover phone and desktop breakpoints
  • Run the same suite across engines in CI
