What is Playwright?

Playwright is an open-source framework from Microsoft for automating and testing web apps across Chromium, Firefox and WebKit.

Playwright drives real browsers with one API, waits automatically for elements to be ready and records traces, screenshots and video for debugging. It supports UI tests, API tests and component tests, and runs in any CI.

Its auto-waiting and multi-engine support have made it the default choice for many teams replacing Selenium or Cypress.

Example

A Playwright test opens the checkout page in WebKit, fills the card form, clicks Pay and expects the confirmation heading to be visible, with a trace saved if it fails.

Best practices

  • Use role and label locators for stability
  • Run tests in parallel across engines
  • Keep traces on failure for debugging
  • Store tests in the same repository as the app
