What is test automation?
Test automation uses software to run tests and compare results with expectations, instead of a person doing it by hand.
Automated tests run the same checks consistently and quickly, so they can run on every change. They cover unit, API, end-to-end, visual, performance and security testing.
The cost of automation was historically in writing and maintaining tests. AI generation and self-healing now remove much of that cost, shifting the human work toward deciding what to test and judging ambiguous failures.
Example
Instead of a tester manually clicking through checkout before each release, an automated suite runs the same 40 checkout scenarios on every pull request in eight minutes.
Best practices
- Automate repeatable, high-value checks first
- Keep tests as code in version control
- Run them in CI on every change
- Leave exploratory and usability work to people
