What is test data management?

Test data management is how teams create, control and reset the data tests depend on.

Tests need accounts, orders, products and other records in known states. Poorly managed test data causes flaky tests, shared-state collisions and accidental use of real customer data.

Good practice uses synthetic data, creates what each test needs and cleans up afterwards, with masked copies of production where realism is essential.

Example

Each checkout test creates its own test user and product through the API, runs the journey and deletes them, so parallel runs never collide.

Best practices

  • Prefer synthetic data over production copies
  • Create data per test through APIs
  • Mask any production-derived data
  • Reset environments between runs
