What is database testing?
Database testing verifies data integrity, schema changes, constraints and the logic stored in a database.
It checks that data is stored, transformed and retrieved correctly: migrations preserve data, constraints hold, stored procedures behave and important queries perform well.
Data bugs are expensive because they persist and spread. A wrong value written today can feed reports, invoices and other systems for weeks.
Example
A migration converts a price column from decimal to float. A database test compares totals before and after and catches rounding errors on 0.3% of orders.
Best practices
- Rehearse migrations on realistic copies
- Check constraints and referential integrity
- Reconcile key totals after changes
- Monitor critical query performance
