Testing glossary

What is user acceptance testing (UAT)?

User acceptance testing is the final check where business users confirm the software does what they need before release.

UAT is performed by the people who will use or own the system, such as operations staff, customers or business stakeholders. It confirms the software fits real workflows, not just the specification.

It works best when the product is already stable. Automated regression and end-to-end testing should catch functional bugs earlier, so UAT can focus on fit and workflow.

Example

Before a new claims system goes live, adjusters process a set of real-world claim scenarios on staging and sign off that the workflow matches how they work.

Best practices

  • Agree acceptance criteria before development
  • Use realistic scenarios from real users
  • Run UAT on a stable, production-like environment
  • Record sign-off for each release
