What is exploratory testing?
Exploratory testing is unscripted testing where a tester learns the product and designs tests at the same time.
Instead of following test cases, the tester investigates the product with a goal, such as trying to break the new billing flow, and adapts based on what they find.
It is good at finding unexpected bugs and usability issues. The best findings are then turned into automated tests so they stay covered.
Example
During a one-hour session on a new file uploader, a tester discovers that uploading a file with an emoji in its name corrupts the filename.
Best practices
- Set a clear charter and time box
- Take notes and capture evidence as you go
- Turn important findings into automated tests
