What is test case?
A test case is a defined set of conditions, steps and expected results used to verify one behaviour of a system.
A good test case states its preconditions, the steps or inputs, and the expected result, so anyone or any machine can run it and get a clear pass or fail.
In automated testing, the test case is code. Clear naming and one behaviour per test make failures easy to understand.
Example
Test case: a signed-in user with an expired card tries to renew. Expected result: the renewal fails with a message asking them to update their card, and no charge is made.
Best practices
- Test one behaviour per case
- Make the expected result specific and observable
- Name cases so failures are self-explanatory
- Link cases to the requirement they cover
