Visual regression testing

Visual regression testing that sees what functional tests miss

Screenshot comparisons at key steps of every journey catch overlapping elements, broken layouts and styling regressions before customers see them.

A test can confirm a button exists and is clickable while the button is hidden behind a cookie banner, rendered white on white, or pushed off screen on mobile. Functional assertions check the DOM, not what a person sees.

QAShift captures screenshots at the meaningful steps of each journey, compares them with the approved baseline and highlights differences that matter, while ignoring dynamic content such as dates and avatars.

What our visual regression testing covers

  • Layout integrity

Overlapping, clipped or misaligned elements across breakpoints.

  • Styling regressions

Colour, typography and spacing changes from shared CSS or design tokens.

  • Responsive behaviour

Desktop, tablet and phone layouts compared side by side.

  • Theme coverage

Light and dark themes checked independently.

  • Dynamic content masking

Timestamps, user data and animations are masked to avoid false alarms.

  • Approval workflow

Intended changes are approved once and become the new baseline.

What it catches before your customers do

  • A CSS refactor pushes the checkout button below the fold on mobile
  • Dark mode renders form labels invisible
  • A new banner overlaps the navigation on Safari
  • A font fails to load and the layout collapses

Two ways to get it done

Run it yourself

Visual tests are included on every Verity plan and run alongside functional tests in CI.

We run it for you

Your engineer chooses meaningful checkpoints, tunes masking to keep noise low and approves intended design changes with your team.

What you get

  • Screenshot baselines in your repo
  • Highlighted diffs on failures
  • Per-breakpoint and per-theme checks
  • An approval flow for intended changes

Frequently asked questions

Won’t visual tests produce lots of false positives?

Not when they are tuned. Dynamic regions are masked, thresholds ignore anti-aliasing noise and checkpoints are chosen at stable steps.

How do we approve intended design changes?

Review the diff and approve it. The new screenshot becomes the baseline for future runs.

Is visual testing included in every plan?

Yes. Visual tests are part of every self-serve plan, including Free, and every managed plan.

Which browsers are compared?

Chromium, Firefox and WebKit engines at the breakpoints you choose.
