What is forward-deployed engineer (FDE)?
A forward-deployed engineer is an engineer from a vendor who works embedded with a customer’s team to deliver an outcome.
The model was popularised by data and AI companies that placed engineers directly with customers. In QA, a forward-deployed engineer owns the customer’s test suite: mapping what to test, building and maintaining tests, triaging failures and reporting results.
It combines the leverage of software with human accountability, so the customer gets an outcome rather than another tool to operate.
Example
A startup without a QA hire gets a forward-deployed QA engineer who builds a 60-test suite in five days, then sends a daily ship or hold report with verified bugs filed in Jira.
Best practices
- Agree the outcomes the engineer owns
- Give scoped access to repos, staging and chat
- Review coverage and results regularly
- Keep the work in your own repository
